The 2nd Korea-Indonesia Physics Joint Workshop with a focus on Interdisciplinary Physics will be held on August 9, 2024 (Friday).
💡 Introduction
The field of physics is marked by its continual pursuit of understanding the fundamental principles that govern the universe. As the universe is universal, the Korea-Indonesia Physics Joint Workshop emerges from recognizing Indonesian and Korean physicists’ scientific contributions to understanding the universe through a universal physics language. The workshop aims to establish a platform for researchers and students from these two countries to come together, share their unique perspectives, and forge collaborations that transcend geographical and cultural boundaries. This collaborative effort seeks to harness the strengths of both nations in advancing the frontiers of physics and fostering mutual understanding.
Continuing the success of the 1st workshop held in 2023, the 2nd workshop this year will specifically address interdisciplinary issues in physics. Interdisciplinary research is a distinguishing feature of modern science because many problems can only be solved by several scientific disciplines together. In particular, physics as one of the most important scientific fields provides the conceptual foundation for science and technical disciplines. With physics, combinations of different scientific fields that can be incorporated into the interdisciplinary concentration are almost limitless, for example, statistical physics, sociophysics, biophysics, and geophysics. In the modern world, physicists often interact with a large number of other disciplines to address pressing academic and applied problems.
In this year’s workshop, we will learn about interdisciplinary physics research fields from four speakers, consisting of two Korean professors and two Indonesian researchers. The workshop will be held on one day: August 9th, 2024, as a satellite meeting of the Indonesia Research and Innovation Expo (https://inariexpo.com). The workshop is jointly funded by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP). Since 2023, Indonesia has become one of 18 member countries of APCTP through BRIN and the University of Indonesia (UI).

- Prof. Jae-Hyung Jeon (APCTP and POSTECH, Korea)
Presentation title: “Physics of Living and Active Matter”
Abstract. Living systems, as physical entities, often exhibit complex behaviors and exist far from equilibrium. Statistical nonequilibrium physics, soft condensed matter, and stochastic processes are physical and mathematical theories that can successfully describe various living systems at microscopic scales. In this talk, I introduce frontier theoretical physics topics at the intersection of biological physics and statistical physics. Part 1 delves into the organization of chromosomes and the heterogeneous diffusion of DNA-binding proteins as well as the intricate target search dynamics. By investigating how chromosomes are organized and how proteins locate their specific DNA targets, we uncover the underlying physical principles driving these essential cellular functions. Part 2 focuses on the dynamics of active particles within viscoelastic polymer environments. Through a combination of simulations and theoretical models, we will explore how active particles diffuse under the influence of the surrounding polymeric matrix. - Prof. Woo-Sung Jung (POSTECH, Korea)
Presentation title: “Physics of Social Complexity”
Abstract. Physics spans its scope from nature to social phenomena. In particular, the theory of complex systems, in which many components interact with each other and the system evolves, has pioneered a new area of social physics, including ecophysics. Applications of ecophysics range from nonlinear dynamics and fractal theory dealing with financial time series data to opinion dynamics. In addition, physics contributes to social phenomenon analysis and policy suggestions, such as the evolution of technology using bibliometric data, human mobility using traffic data, and urban growth. - Dr. Albertus Sulaiman (BRIN Research Center for Climate and Atmosphere)
Presentation title: “Environmental Physics”
Abstract. Physics is intricately intertwined with all facets of life, including natural phenomena intricately linked to our environment, such as climate, atmosphere, sea, and their interactions with living organisms. Our focus in this study is on mesoscale physics, where classical physics is fulfilled, although with necessary adjustments for application. This assessment elucidates how we comprehend the phenomena around us using theoretical physics, particularly classical physics (fluids) and electromagnetics. The world around us comprises solids, liquids, gases, plasma, and the phase transitions between them. Phenomena such as mountain winds, katabatic winds, morning glories, tornadoes, land-sea-breeze circulation, smoke haze due to forest fires, as well as the distribution of marine or estuarine sediments including internal solitons, are expounded upon based on the principles of physics. We begin with the equations of motion (Lagrangian), and subsequently compare them with measurement data. - Dr. Roni Muslim (BRIN Research Center for Quantum Physics)
Presentation title: “Understanding Social Phenomena from a Physics Lens”
Abstract. Physics is not limited to studying the physical universe but also provides robust tools and methods for understanding complex social phenomena. One effort by scientists to understand social phenomena is proposing opinion dynamics models to investigate how opinions spread within society. This talk will discuss various theoretical models used to understand this process, particularly binary opinion models. The primary focus will be analyzing phase transition phenomena, such as the shift from consensus to polarization, hysteresis phenomena, and system scaling across various network topologies, from the simple to the complex networks. We will also explore the practical applications of opinion dynamics in social-political contexts and how insights from these studies can be utilized to design effective interventions for managing information dissemination and addressing societal polarization. This talk aims to provide an overview of the fundamental mechanisms governing opinion dynamics and to inspire further discussion on the practical and theoretical implications of recent findings in this field.
