Brief Introduction
The Indonesian Quantum Initiative (IQI) invites outstanding INDONESIAN students to apply to the BRIN Degree by Research (DbR) program. In collaboration with faculty from ITB, ITS, IPB, and UI, we offer Master’s and PhD opportunities in quantum science and technology.
🔬 Possible Research Areas
- Quantum chip design & characterization
- Quantum computing & algorithms
- Quantum control & optimization
- Quantum key distribution
- Quantum sensing
- Quantum information theory
🗓️ Application Deadline (for the First Batch): 30 November 2025

How This Program Works
- This program leverages the master and PhD by research (not regular by coursework) programs available at the graduate schools of ITB, ITS, IPB, and UI. Financial support is provided through the BRIN DbR fellowship, which covers tuition each semester (for 2-year master’s or 3-year doctoral programs) and may also cover admission fees (reimbursed if applicable). Subject to national budget availability in a given year, exceptional students may also apply for the BRIN Research Assistantship (RA), which typically covers monthly living costs. For official information on financial support, please refer to the websites of the DbR fellowship and BRIN’s national talent management system.
- The 2-year Master’s or 3-year PhD program will be supervised by at least one BRIN-Q researcher and one university professor (minimum rank: Associate Professor / Lektor Kepala) from the relevant field at one of the universities listed above. The university professor will serve as the main promoter, and the BRIN-Q researcher will serve as the co-promoter. For the list of BRIN-Q researchers across all research groups, see https://quantumresearch.id/people.html.
- During the program, students are required to conduct their research mainly at BRIN’s facilities with the BRIN-Q host researcher, while also following the schedule of research lectures and seminars on campus each semester. For example, one of our DbR students affiliated with UI spends four workdays per week at BRIN’s Serpong office and one workday at UI to meet regularly with their supervisor. This schedule can be flexibly adjusted based on a mutual agreement among the three parties (student, BRIN-Q researcher, and university professor).
How to Apply and to be Selected
- We plan to open this program every semester; applicants should be at least in their final year of undergraduate or master’s studies in STEM fields, preferably in one of the following majors: mathematics, physics (or engineering physics), chemistry (or chemical engineering), computer science (or informatics), electronics (or electrical engineering), and materials science (or materials engineering). There is no age restriction; everyone (Indonesian) is welcome. For the first batch, candidates should send their CV and a statement of interest to quantum(at)brin(dot)go(dot)id by 30 November 2025.
- After 30 November 2025, candidates must pass the university admission test (held every semester) for the research degree program at their chosen university (one of: ITB, ITS, IPB, or UI). We follow each university’s policies, and candidates must strictly adhere to the university’s deadlines. Please check the relevant university’s admission deadlines yourself. Meanwhile, the BRIN DbR fellowship is open year-round; if the budget is limited or unavailable in a particular batch, you may reapply in a later batch.
- Candidates who have already contacted or collaborated with a BRIN-Q researcher and a prospective professor from one of the IQI consortium universities will receive higher priority for recommendation for the BRIN DbR fellowship funding.
Necessary Documents
- Until November 30, 2025, candidates only need to send their CV along with a statement of interest to quantum(at)brin(dot)go(dot)id. If you send the email much earlier, we may review the CV and statement of interest before the deadline and help you connect with BRIN-Q researchers and prospective supervisors.
- The official list of required documents for the DbR fellowship is available at: https://byresearch.brin.go.id/syarat-dan-ketentuan. Candidates must check this webpage to have complete information about the DbR fellowship.
- The research proposal is the single most important document for securing the BRIN DbR fellowship. Please discuss the proposal with your prospective promoters (one BRIN-Q researcher and one university professor). The proposal should be ready by 30 November 2025, but it does not need to be emailed to us. It will be submitted via the byresearch.brin.go.id website along with other documents required by the BRIN DbR fellowship. Document templates are available on that website.
- Other documents needed for university admission (especially to pass the admission test) should be checked and prepared by candidates themselves per each university’s requirements. It should be noted again that in the admission, you must select the research study program (“program studi master/doktor jalur riset”), not the regular program by coursework. You may consult with the prospective supervisor from the university for further details of the research study program there.
University Professors Available in This Program
Below is a list of university professors who have agreed to join this program and can co-supervise prospective students with BRIN-Q researchers. Candidates may also contact other professors not on this list, provided they are affiliated with ITB, ITS, IPB, or UI and are available to supervise.
